Statement closing date
Updated
The statement closing date is the cutoff at the end of a credit-card billing cycle. Transactions that post by the cutoff appear on that statement. Transactions that post afterward wait for the next cycle. The statement balance is computed at the close, and the minimum payment and the due date are set from it.
The due date is later. For open-end credit covered by Regulation Z, the periodic statement must be delivered at least 21 days before the payment due date. That gap is a delivery rule. It does not mean a credit bureau updates on a particular day.
Many large issuers report the closing balance to the nationwide bureaus. Some do not, and no statute picks one reporting day for every issuer. If the issuer reports the closing balance, a payment made after the close changes the next report, not the one that already went out. Utilization math that ignores this date is using the wrong snapshot.
